Selma Ash, 90, of Old Greenwich, died July 22, at her home in Riverside. She was born Selma Victoria Finch on June 24, 1922, in Stamford, to Robert and Jennie Hagstrom Finch.
In 1927, the family moved to Irvine Road in Old Greenwich. Mrs Ash remained in Old Greenwich until 2008, when she moved to Hill House Senior Residence in Riverside.
A son, Chris Ash, of Westport, Mass., and two daughters, Fran Gerrior of Beverly, Mass., and Cindy Strait of Newtown; three sons-in-law, Dan George, Charlie Gerrior, Sr, and Don Strait; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends, including Audrey Schilling and Estelle Wray, survive Mrs Ash. Her husband, Frank Ash, predeceased her.
Mrs Ash graduated from the Greenwich Hospital Nursing School in 1943. She joined the US Army and served as a nurse on military bases in Florida and Louisiana, as a second lieutenant. After the war, she married Frank Ash and raised three children on Park Avenue.
She enjoyed playing card games and baseball and was known for her sense of fair play and wise counsel.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, September 22, at First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich.
