NHS Student Donates
To Kevinâs Community Center
Stacey Gordon, a senior at Newtown High School, has raised $700 as part of a community service project in Kirsten Hardyâs American Government class.
Each student had to complete a political action project based on a principle of the Constitution. Stacey based her project on âquality of lifeâ due to her concern with the many Newtown residents who had minimal or no health insurance.
She had read several articles on Kevinâs Community Center in The Newtown Bee and was impressed with the mission of the center. She decided to use her culinary skills to organize a special sale of her chocolate toffee at her place of worship, Newtown Congregational Church.
While she initially baked 20 batches of chocolate toffee to sell, Stacey found she could not meet the demand of all the parishioners. She baked 30 additional batches to fill all the orders. Staceyâs father, the Reverend Steven Gordon, is the minister of Newtown Congregational Church.
The money was donated directly to Kevinâs Community Center.
Staceyâs project will be completed when she submits her report on the project detailing how she chose to select it, how it affected her, and how it impacted the community.
Stacey has applied to the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where she is aspires to become a physicianâs assistant or nurse practitioner.
