Jewish Federation Helps Tsunami Victims

SOUTHBURY — The Federation, Jewish Communities of Western Connecticut, Inc, is responding to the major disaster resulting from the tsunami in South Asia last weekend. A check for $10,000 been forwarded to the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) of the United Jewish Communities in advance of a communitywide fundraising effort.

The JDC will allocate the funds raised through this effort to relief and social service organizations on the ground in South Asia. It is in the process of evaluating what is needed the most and which organizations can provide those services.

Since 1914, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Inc has served as the overseas arm of the American Jewish community. In times of crisis — natural disasters, war, and famine — JDC offers aid to non-Jews to fulfill the Jewish tenet of tikkun olam, the moral responsibility to repair the world and alleviate suffering wherever it exists.

The Federation is accepting donations on behalf of disaster victims through its website www.jfed.net or via mail at the Federation, PO Box 657, Southbury CT 06488. Contact 203-267-3177 for further information.
