Hawleyville Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Old Bethel Road about 6:21 pm on June 4.

Involved in that collision were Matthew Seiter, 36, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2002 GMC Envoy SUV, and motorist Stephen Ippolito, 39, of Bethel, who was driving a 2010 Volksawgen Tiguan SUV. There were no injuries. Police issued Seiter an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Traffic Stop

Police report they made a traffic stop and pulled over motorist Jimmy DosSantos, 30, of Waterbury, about 10 pm on June 4, near 57-B Church Hill Road, because the vehicle he was driving had a non-functioning brake lamp. After investigating, police charged Dos Santos with driving with a suspended license, a brake lamp violation, and possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana. DosSantos was released for a June 18 court appearance.

Warrant

Police said that at about 10 am on June 3, they arrested Jonathan Christie, 35, of Danbury, on a warrant, lodging charges of third-degree criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Police received a complaint about an incident from a Sandy Hook Center caller on April 23, after which police investigated and then obtained a court warrant to arrest Christie. Police released Christie on $100 bail for a June 25 court appearance.

Yogananda Street

Police report they received a call about 2:40 am on June 2 informing them that suspicious activity had occurred on Yogananda Street in Sandy Hook.

Police went to the area to investigate and learned that several residential curbside mailboxes had been vandalized. They are investigating the criminal mischief and ask anyone with knowledge of the crimes to contact investigating Officer Fernando Pereira at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841, in regard to Case No. 2019-14030.

Sedan Vs Pole

At about 4:44 am on June 2, motorist J. Sevrain, 35, of Danbury, was driving a 2015 Kia Optima sedan northward near 41 Swamp Road, when he lost control of the auto and drove off the right road shoulder, striking a utility pole head-on, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps went to the scene, but Sevrain refused medical attention. Botsford volunteer firefighters also responded. Police issued Sevrain an infraction for failure to maintain the travel lane.

Hawleyville Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Barnabas Road and Tunnel Road in Hawleyville about 12:25 pm on June 2.

Involved in the collision were motorist Patrick McNulty, 28, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2007 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, and Anthony Mascaro, 33, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2017 commercial International 4000 truck, police said.

There were no injuries. McNulty received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

DUI Charge

State police said after receiving reports about an erratic driver, they found that the vehicle in question had crashed in a one-car accident on westbound Interstate 84 at about 10:08 pm on June 1. There were no injuries.

After investigating, state police charged motorist Sadya DeLeon, 35, of Naugatuck, with driving under the influence. DeLeon was released on $1,000 bail for a June 18 court appearance.

Suspended License

Police said they saw a vehicle that had illegal darkly tinted windows, after which they stopped it about 7:42 pm on May 31, near the intersection of South Main Street and Button Shop Road to investigate.

Police charged motorist Leenice Edlashia Pierce, 29, of Bridgeport, with driving with a suspended license. Police released Pierce for a June 25 appearance in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Police also learned that there warrants carrying various charges pending against Pierce in connection with previous incidents. Newtown police released Pierce into the custody of Waterbury police for arrest processing.

Sports Car Collision

Motorist Lucille Gainsback, 56, of Newtown, who was driving a 2008 Mazda Miata roadster northward on Brushy Hill Road about 10:17 pm on May 31, lost control of the auto, went off the left road shoulder, struck a curbside mailbox at 150 Brushy Hill Road, and then hit a stone wall at 138 Brushy Hill Road, heavily damaging the auto, police said.

Neither Gainsback nor a passenger were injured. Police verbally warned Gainsback for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Eight Warrants

Newtown police report that while traveling in Danbury on May 30, they spotted Ryan Francis, 34, of Newington, along the side of the road and knew that there were multiple outstanding warrants for Francis’s arrest stemming from incidents that had occurred in Hartford and West Hartford.

Newtown police took Francis into custody and charged him on eight warrants, lodging one count of first-degree failure to appear in court, six counts of second-degree failure to appear in court, and one count of failure to respond to an infraction. Police said that they had received calls from Dodgingtown residents recently reporting Francis’s activity in that area as suspicious, after which police investigated and learned of the eight pending warrants.

Police held Francis on $15,000 bail overall overnight for an appearance on May 31 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury. On June 4, Francis was being held on $15,000 bail in the Bridgeport Correctional Center for a June 28 court appearance in Hartford. Francis has not pleaded to any of the charges pending against him.

Evading Responsibility

State police said that an unknown vehicle entered the travel lane of a 2013 Chevrolet Spark on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10, about 5:55 pm on May 29, after which it struck the Chevrolet, causing the Chevrolet to flip over. The unknown driver who caused the crash drove away.

The man driving the Chevrolet received minor injuries and was transported by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital to be checked. The incident is under investigation.

Fence Off Truck

Trucker Marc Collette, 46, of Quebec, Canada,was driving a 2017 Kenwood truck eastward on Botsford Hill Road about 9:33 pm on May 29, when while attempting to drive below the low-clearance Housatonic Railroad overpass, a spool of wire fencing, which was cargo on the truck, struck the bridge and fell off the truck’s trailer, police said. There was no damage.

Audi Hits GMC

Motorist Scott Paklaian 60, of Monroe, who was driving a 2015 GMC Terrain SUV eastward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, at about 5:31 pm on May 28, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Jeffrey Stanley, 47, of Danbury, who was driving 2012 Audi A-6 sedan, state police said,

There were no injuries. Stanley received an infraction for following too closely.

Wasserman Way

A two-vehicle collision occurred on westbound Wasserman Way, east of its intersection with Oakview Road, about 6:26 pm on May 28, police report.

In that incident, motorist Gusatvo Freitas-Cunha, 38, of Danbury, who was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Express van, struck the rear end of a 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 SUV driven by Barbara Ahern, 58, of Woodbury. There were no injuries. Freitas-Cunha was verbally warned for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Rear-Ender

State police said that at about 11:13 pm on May 28 on eastbound Interstate 84, about 750 feet west of the Exit 9 off-ramp, motorist Jeffrey Durkin, 31, of Newtown, who was driving a 2009 Hyundai Elnatra, stopped for construction-related traffic, after which the Hyundai was struck from behind by a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Justin Verecka, 19, of Woodbury.

Durkin received a possible injury. Verecka received an infraction for following too closely in a construction zone.
