Hunters For

 The Hungry

NEW MILFORD — The Hunters for the Hungry program has begun its sixth season of accepting donations for delivery to area food pantries and shelters. In the past five years, more than 17,000 pounds of game have been donated by Connecticut hunters.

There are specific requirements that must be followed when donating to this program.

All game must be hunted and legally taken. The meat must be processed, packaged (in five-pound packages or less), and refrigerated. Each package must be properly labeled.

Brochures that explain the program are available at DEP check stations, meat processors, and program contacts. The brochure includes an approved, reproducible label. This year there is an increase in the number of meat processors who will cut up the deer free or for a discount if the meat is to be donated to the program.

There will be a drawing for anyone who donated a minimum of five pounds of meat to the program and submitted a drawing tickets. Shotguns, rifles, and other hunting items will be given away.

For more information about the program call 860/350-1001.
