Selectmen Slate Open Meeting On Fairfield Hills

The Board of Selectmen invites Newtown residents to a special meeting Monday

night to discuss the town and its future with Fairfield Hills.

The meeting will be held in the meeting room at the Cyrenius Booth Library at

7:30 pm.

Last fall, the selectmen-appointed Fairfield Hills Advisory Committee

recommended that Newtown not purchase the 186-acre core campus of Fairfield

Hill, currently up for sale by the state. The board cited several reasons,

including cost and liability.

However, there are a growing number of residents who believe the town should

purchase the property, including Ruby Johnson, who believes Fairfield Hills is

the kind of land the town can't afford to pass up. Earlier this year, the

Newtown resident presented the selectmen with a petition signed by 300

residents requesting the town re-examine its "no buy" position.

On Monday, the selectmen, the advisory committee and members of the public

will all be present.
