Author Lisa Yu Hosts Book Reading, Touch-A-Fire-Truck Event
Newtown resident Lisa Yu — author of My Mommy is a Firefighter and its counterpart My Daddy is a Firefighter — conducted a book reading in the Meeting Room of C.H. Booth Library on July 20.
The books are part of Ms Yu’s “My Parent’s Job” children’s series. The author’s first releases, the Firefighter titles, were released simultaneously in June.
According to her flyer at the event, “The goal of our books is to help families solve the problem of explaining to their children where they went when they go to work. We want children to understand what their parent is doing during that time and feel proud while also knowing they love them all the while.”
Four-year-old twins Ramiza and Waqas Johnston especially enjoyed the book because as Waqas explained, “My daddy puts out fires!” and is a firefighter in town.
After the children attending the book reading learned about the work that firefighters do, they took a guided tour of a real fire truck with the Newtown Hook & Ladder Volunteer Fire Company in the library’s parking lot.
Children got an opportunity to sit in the truck, find out about the equipment, and meet local firefighters.
Siblings Tyler Dore, 8, and Mia Dore, 5, said they were eager to explore the fire truck outside but explained that they were most excited to see their volunteer firefighter friend “Miss Emily” Clark.
