Bea Piskura and Irene Eckert were the first to take the dance floor, grass skirts swaying to the music as their gracefully fluttering hands spelled out the songs to the audience, Hawaiian-style.

“I learned [how to dance] in Hawaii when I was there in 1999,” said Ms Piskura, “and I had some lessons here at the center. I love to dance — any kind of dance, I’ll do it!” she exclaimed.

Their enthusiasm was contagious, and before long, they were joined by numerous other hip-swinging, arm waving, hulaing members of the audience. In between the dance numbers, Mr Michaels shared humorous anecdotes that kept the group laughing.

A reception featuring Hawaiian treats — coconut cookies and pineapple — followed for all the brightly clad dancers who had worked up an appetite. For the seniors who had worked up a thirst, a special quaff was at the ready: Hawaiian Punch, what else?
