Hesse's May 22 Artifact Sale Nearly Reaches $250,000

OTEGO, N.Y. -- The May 22 artifact sale at Hesse's Galleries Auctioneers and
Appraisers featured a silver gorget with two turtle pendants hallmarked in 14
places, which brought $8,800; a silver headband hallmarked by Simon Curtis
($9,460); a silver medal with Masonic emblems inscribed "Joseph Brandt"
($15,950); and a Simon Curtis silver four-part gorget with two matching eagles
($27,500).
The auction consisted of artifacts principally from the collections of the
Manley Family of Vermont and the Tierson Family, New York State, and included
many scarce and hard to find objects such as a wonderful pair of hi-top, sinew
sewn moccasins with lazy stitch beadwork with yellow, green and red colors,
$3,960; a fine wooden ball head club with tack and file brand decoration,
$5,280; Great Lakes beaded bandolier bag, $2,090; a pipe Tomahawk with file
branded handle, $2,135; and a pre-historic bar amulet, $1,210.
The trade silver category demanded the most attention. Items of note were a
hollow-bodied turtle pendant, $2,970; kissing otters pendant, $1,210; a
Lorraine cross hallmarked Charles Arnoldi, $2,750; a pair of silver armbands
marked Jonathan Tyler, $2,970; and a pair of small heart pierced earrings with
Hudson Bay hallmark, $2,200.
Also offered in this sale was a variety of Paleo-Indian, Archaic and Woodland
stone artifacts such as spearpoints, gouges, plummets, pipes, weavings,
baskets, pre-Columbian pottery and McKinney-Hall prints.
