Second In As Many Days: Police Respond To Incident Near NHS
In response to complaints, at about 2 pm on January 14, police stopped a motorist driving a black SUV near Berkshire Motors at 25 Berkshire Road, across the street from Newtown High School.
That motor vehicle stop occurred as high school students were leaving the premises after a day of classes.
Police had received two 911 complaints stating that the SUV was being driven erratically westward on Berkshire Road, east of the high school.
“While officers were dispatched to this call, the call was upgraded in response, after one of the 911 callers reported that the operator of this SUV brandished a handgun at the 911 caller,” police said.
“Police, for obvious reasons, increased the response of police personnel to the area,” police said.
Multiple police vehicles thus responded to the stopped vehicle positioned across the street from the high school.
“It was determined through police investigation and an extensive search of the driver and the SUV, that the driver of this vehicle did not posses a handgun. No charges were filed against the driver,” police report.
On January 13, there was a massive police response to an incident on Oakview Road, south of the high school property, as police contended with a suicidal man sitting in parked sedan who refused to surrender to police. That man was eventually subdued by police and later admitted to a hospital for psychiatric care.
Police learned of that incident after the man had initially stopped at Berkshire Motors and told people there of his suicidal feelings. That incident resulted in lockdown status at the high school.
