New Year's Roundup At Time & Again

(with 3 cuts)

By Rita Easton

LINDEN, N.J. -- Following a gala preview cocktail party on New Year's morning,

possibly attended by some party-goers who hadn't gone home yet from the

previous night's revelries, Time & Again Antiques held its first estate

auction of the year at noon on Friday.

Jeff Zimmerman of the gallery reported a "packed house" in spirited

competition for the 675 lots offered. An accident on the podium created an

initial stir when a display case fell over, destroying approximately $5,000 in

auction merchandise, including an Icart crystal and a sculpture which was

decapitated. Humor was restored in a short time with the appearance of

nine-year-old Michael Zimmerman, Jeff's son, who soon became the highlight of

the event with his job of calling bids.

An Atlanta auctioneer on a "busman's holiday" purchased the starring lot, a

Wooton desk, at $14,300.

An Adams style bedroom suite comprising eight pieces realized $7,700; a pair

of indoor bronze benches also brought $7,700; a zinc classical female outdoor

figure, "as is," made $6,600; a cylinder disc player did $4,500; an Aesthetic

Movement inlaid chair with carved lions' heads brought $3,000; and a set of

Nineteenth Century Georgian style chairs, seven sides and one open arm,

achieved $3,100.

A small Handel reverse painted lamp shade on a base, eight inches high, made

$800; an L&J.G. Stickley lamp table in oak, with small round surface, reached

$1,100; a pair of Tiffany Studio bronze Buddha bookends fetched $880; a Handel

shade on a bronze dolphin-footed lamp base reached $1,050; a nine by 12 foot

Hamadan rug went out at $2,000; and an eight foot tall crystal chandelier,

from the ballroom of an Atlantic City hotel, garnered $5,500.

A painting by Lawrence Nelson Weber, the oil on canvas depicting a scene with

cowboys, sold at $1,200; a triple-door French armoire, with bronze mounts,

reached $3,850; a ten-piece Regency mahogany dining room suite was purchased

for $3,300; a Pairpoint style lamp with reverse painted shade made $2,860; a

small inlaid scenic trinket box sold at $660; and a mahogany centennial

sideboard sold at $3,850.

A small KPM five-inch plaque of a gypsy woman sold at $2,850; a tiered iron

fountain, signed "Fiske," surmounted with a figure, 5'6" high, reached $4,400;

a set of 12 Imari Royal Crown Derby plates went at $1,100; a mahogany Kindel

block-front desk reached $8,250; a pair of bronze and marble cassoulets went

at $4,700; and a figural carved Nineteenth Century chest with a matching

dresser, both possibly Horner, garnered $5,300.

Prices quoted reflect a ten percent buyer's premium.
