LOWELL, MASS. — The sculptural and architectural aspects of antique quilts are featured in a special exhibition entitled “Thrilled To Pieces: The Awesome Intricacy of Multi-Pieced Quilts” at the New England Quilt Museum through April 2.

Curated by New York City antiques dealer and quilt author Laura Fisher, the exhibition showcases quilts made from 1,000 to as many as 25,000 pieces. Painstakingly arranged with postage-stamp-sized pieces placed in complex interplays of light and dark tones, these quilts reveal a larger geometric design. Fisher remarks that the patient artistry of the tenacious women who made these quilts resembles that “of the sculptor or the collage maker rather than the needle worker. They compose by adding on and maneuvering bits until a design takes form.”

The museum is at 18 Shattuck Street; hours are 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday–Saturday. The museum is closed on Sundays January through April. For information, 978-452-4207 or www.nequiltmuseum.org.
