Youth Lacrosse Highlights

Bantam Girls’ In-House

Smashers vs Hound Dogs: Smashers: Meaghan Lynn had a great defensive game. Emily Bell shined in the goal with 4 great saves. Brooke Varnum had great passes. Alexa Leidlein had a goal Hound Dogs: Lauren Caririno had a great offensive game. Savannah LaFerriere did a good job as goalie. Danielle Powell played a solid offensive and defensive game.

Hungry Hippos vs Screaming Eagles: Hungry Hippos: Lauren Zimmerman and Katie McCabe played highly energetic games on both ends of the field. Jenna Carvalho and Meghan Doyle were solid in goal. Screaming Eagles: Jenna Lavalle had a goal and an assist while Bridget Walsh and Nikki Zaccaro each added a goal for the Eagles. Caroline Condon had an assist and four ground balls while Kayla Keddy added an assist and two grounders. Alison Kelleher and Sydney Marino had good defensive games while Walsh and Zaccaro combined for a shutout in goal, each making three saves.

Hound Dogs vs All Stars: Hound Dogs: Olivia Hage had a great offensive game. Elisandra Daigle did a good job on defense. Kira Smith played a solid offensive game. All Stars: Danielle Samson had a great day in goal with several saves. Elizabeth Cain turned in a strong  performance on defense. Sarah Dowling had two goals and Nevan Gattey had an all around outstanding game.

Bantam Girls’ Travel

Newtown 12, RElax 2: Newtown had a well-rounded offensive attack led by Meghan Doyle with three goals. Emily Bell and Caroline Caporale each added two while five other girls scored a goal. Nevan Gattney had four assists to go along with four ground balls. Julia Sughrue and Tessa Leon-Gambetta each added two assists. The defense was led by Nikki Zaccaro with three ground balls and four intercepted passes while Lauren Zimmerman scooped up four ground balls for Newtown.

Junior Girls

Gold 15, New Fairfield 11: The difference in the game was stellar defense anchored by Tess Baldino, Charlotte Stenz, Celia Gold, Haley Keane and Katie Mossbarger. They continuously stopped a talented New Fairfield attack. In the goal Maddie Peck (8 saves) and Alana O’Donnell (1 save) were solid. Assists were handed out by Maddie Bridges, Eliza Eggleston, Maddy Peck and Sara Annessly. On the attack goals were scored by Casey Harkins, Eggleston Bridges, Michaela Hall, O’Donnell, Katie Cappelli and Laken Hughes.

Senior Girls

Shelton 8, Blue 5: Taylor Reardon and Olivia Korth combined for 8 saves and Tressa Scott snagged 7 ground balls in a tough loss. Brittany Boggs and Katie McManus played solid defense. Noelle Benson, Olivia Ingham, Anna Northrop and Mary Joe Rossi provided the offense for Newtown.

Stratford 8, Blue 2: Amy Caporale and Helena Sorensen had strong performances in goal, stopping 9 shots by an aggressive Stratford attack. Kelsey Packer and Ashley Headen led the team in ground balls.  Amanda Crowell and Packer provided the scoring

Gold 11, New Canaan Senior Black 2: The Gold scored early and often with Kristy Vos Winkle and Meahan Harkins combining for 6 goals. Cassie Ekstrom and Carly Ferris led the team in ground balls won with 5 and 3, respectively. Meaghan Brophy and Paige Murphy added assists. Brianna Leblanc made 4 saves in goal. The rest of the scoring was rounded out by Erin Kenning, Julia Trudell, Ferris and Brophy.

Boys Travel

Newtown Lightning Blue 4, Pomperaug Lightning Black 10: Newtown was down by only a goal at the half and played well into the fourth quarter before running out of gas with an undermanned team. Attackman Matthew Bucci scored. Riley Rising continues to wear down the defense with his non-stop running while playing attack. Oliver Wood played well on both sides of the ball as a middie and attack player and had 3 groundballs and an interception.

Brookfield Junior Blue 11, Newtown Junior Gold 5: Some rugged defense from Matt White, Jake Lambert, Shey Demarche, Andy Braun and Kyle Mangold held the talented Brookfield attack at bay. On offense, Matt Bouton, Joey Santella and Colin Reilly scored and hustled on the ride and ground balls. 

Weston Junior Blue 6, Newtown Junior Gold 5: Connor Hanley scored a nice off-handed goal in the first quarter and was a beast on ground balls all day. Ben Payne ran the field well and had a solid game. Zack Aumueller scored goals at attack with some hard and accurate shots. Bubba Condon made the play of the game in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter. Bubba faked a pass to Colin Reilly then used a pick set by Jonathan Rospenda to find his way to the cage and tie the game. Weston showed some grit and came back to score the winning goal with only 4 seconds left on the clock.

Newtown Lightning Gold 9, Relax Lightning Black 7: Newtown’s offense was led by Ryan Marusi. Goalie Jeremy Salaris battled through a morning fog that impaired vision on the field. After goals scored by Jared Pearson, Matt Myers and Marusi (his fifth of the game) Newtown took an 8-7 lead. Peyton Manning sealed the win on a goal set up on a solid pass from Marusi in the final minutes of the game.

Newtown Lightning Gold 10, Weston Lightning Blue 5: Scott Bauer pulled away with 4 goals and Jared Pearson scored a hat-trick after dominating faceoffs for the Newtown squad. Ryan Marusi, Matt Myers and Mitchell Savoca also put goals on the board, thanks to assists from Grant Varnum, Austin LeBlanc and Kris Whelan. Patrick Conte, Sam Cox, Nicholas Genovese and Colin McCafferty contributed with solid groundball scoops that kept Newtown in possession, while Jeremy Salaris held the goal like a wall with a half-dozen saves.

Newtown Senior Gold 6, New Milford Senior 4: After losing to New Milford in the Brookfield Early Season Tournament championship game, Newtown was looking for revenge. The Gold found it by dominating the ground ball game with James Marusi and Dan Hebert leading the way. Graham Derrickson delivered a solid performance on attack. Brian Kruger and Jack Kearney anchored the defense with physical play. Evan Isaacs came up with 11 saves between the pipes. Newtown had 17 shots and 6 goals, and shot 35 percent. Graham Derrickson had 2 goals, Parker Rodbell scored a goal, Dan Hebert had 3 assists, and Tyler Hanley, Phil Reynolds and James Marusi all scored goals.
