Alice M. Doherty, 61, of 5 Cherry Street, Sandy Hook, died July 21, at her home.
Alice was born in Yonkers, N.Y., October 8, 1938, a daughter of Mary (Arciolla) Tobin of Sandy Hook and the late Thomas Tobin. She came to Newtown in 1970. She made her home in Sandy Hook where she raised her three sons. Her passions included quilting, orchids, opera, and the New York Giants. She will be missed by many friends and her loving family.
Alice will be remembered by many for kindness and her wonderful sense of humor. She also loved animals and spent many years as a volunteer for Newtown Animal Welfare.
Her tenure as an employee of Newtownâs school system fostered in Alice a desire to further help the children of her community. She subsequently helped found Newtown Youth Services. For the last eight years, Alice was employed by the law firm of Cohen and Wolf in Danbury.
Aliceâs strength and courage will forever be an inspiration to those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her mother, survivors include three sons, James Doherty of Roseboom, N.Y., Sean Doherty of Sandy Hook, and Shannon Doherty of Newtown; one brother, Thomas Tobin of Southampton, N.Y.; one sister, Debra (Tobin) Gray of Accord, N.Y., and four grandchildren.
A gathering of friends was held July 22 at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.
