The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have Steve Hamlin painting in watercolor for its next meeting/program, scheduled for Wednesday, June 28, at 1:30 pm. Mr Hamlin's subject will be birds; his watercolor, Canada Warbler," is shown above.

The demonstration will take place in the lower level of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole). The public is invited to attend, and admission is free.

A native New Englander, Mr Hamlin has lived in western Massachusetts most of his life.

A painter since childhood, until recently Mr Hamlin has always worked in watercolor. Over the past couple of years, he has also worked extensively in graphite and experimented with acrylics and pastels. Mr Hamlin's work reflects three lifelong passions: nature, history, and architecture.

Mr Hamlin's work has been in group and solo shows throughout the Northeast, notably the Bennington (VT) Center for the Arts, the Salmagundi Club, the National Art League, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, and shows of New England Watercolor Society. This year, his work was included in the Art of the Animal Kingdom show at the Bennington Center for the Arts for the sixth consecutive year, and in the Art and the Animal show, the annual exhibition of the Society of Animal Artists at Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, N.Y.

He was promoted to signature status in New England Watercolor Society (2015), Northeast Watercolor Society (2016), Society of Animal Artists (2016), and named a Master Artist at the Bennington Collective (2017).

For his SCAN presentation Mr Hamlin will demonstrate techniques he uses in painting wildlife in watercolors.

The demo will highlight his diffused backgrounds as well as more tightly rendered applications typically used on his main subject.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs but additional information is available by calling 203-426-6654 or visiting scanart.org.
