Minivan Vs Deer

About 8:17 pm May 5, motorist Sarah Harris, 42, of Ridgefield was driving a 2002 Honda Odyssey minivan southward on South Main Street, near Greenbriar Lane, when a deer ran out onto the road, police report.

The vehicle and deer collided. The deer then continued traveling across the road.

Harris was not injured in the mishap, which damaged the minivan’s hood and windshield, police said. Police took no enforcement.

Warrant

Police served an arrest warrant against a Middletown resident on May 5, charging the person with three offenses stemming from a 2004 incident.

Police said they arrested Rommel Chavez, 28, on a charge of  failure to appear in court, plus charges of improper use of marker plates, and failure to have headlamps.

After posting $1,000 bail, police released Chavez for a May 19 court appearance.

DUI Arrest

At about 1:25 am on May 9, police said they observed motorist Richard J. Cavanaugh, 44, of 9 High Bridge Road driving northward on South Main Street.

Cavanaugh drove through a red traffic signal at the intersection of South Main Street, Glover Avenue, Main Street, and Sugar Street, near the police station, police said.

Police said they stopped Cavanaugh on Main Street at its intersection with East Street. Police said they smelled alcohol in the vehicle which Cavanaugh was driving. Police said Cavanaugh told them that he had taken prescribed medication which causes drowsiness.

After investigating, police charged Cavanaugh with driving under the influence and with disobeying a traffic signal. Police held Cavanaugh on $100 bail for a court appearance later that day.

Minivan Vs Pedestrian

At about 12:32 pm May 8, motorist Kevin Fitzgerald, 45, of 21 Berkshire Road, who was driving a 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager minivan, stopped in a travel lane of the parking lot at Lexington Gardens at 32 Church Hill Road, police said.

Fitzgerald had let two passengers exit the minivan and was then backing the vehicle into a parking space, when pedestrian Eugene Rosen, 62, of 22 Riverside Road walked behind the moving vehicle, police said.

The minivan struck the pedestrian, causing minor injuries to the man, police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated Rosen at the scene, police said.

Police said the collision occurred on private property, so they took no enforcement action.

  

Rear-End Collision

At about 9:40 pm May 6, motorist Viola Paliotti, 24, of Torrington, who was driving a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am westward on Church Hill Road, slowed to make a left turn into the Mobil gas station at 67 Church Hill Road, police said.

Westbound motorist Diana Briggs Rawson, 17, of 34 Platts Hill Road, who was driving a 2005 Toyota Highlander sport-utility vehicle, then struck the Pontiac from behind, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Paliotti to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

Police issued Rawson an infraction ticket for following too closely. Police gave Paliotti an infraction ticket for failure to wear a seatbelt.

I-84 DUI

State police report that they responded to a two-car accident on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 13, about 4:15 am May 8, in which they determined that one of the two drivers was intoxicated.

State police arrested motorist Stephen Lombard, 28, of Prospect on charges of driving under the influence, a lane usage violation, and a safety belt violation.

After processing the arrest, state police released Lombard on $1,000 bail for a May 23 court date.

Highway DUI

State police said they detected motorist Carlos Cordeiro, 43, of Danbury, driving a vehicle 90 miles per hour on westbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 10, about 1:30 am May 7, so they stopped him to investigate.

State police arrested Cordeiro on charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving, a lane usage violation, and a parking violation.

Cordeiro posted $1,000 bail and was released for a May 23 court appearance.

Drug Charges

State police report that at about 3:37 am on May 5, they noticed two suspicious vehicles parked in the Hawleyville Road commuter parking lot for Exit 9 of Interstate 84.

On investigating, state police arrested Todd L. Froehlich, no age or address given, on three drug charges.

State police charged Froehlich with possession of crack cocaine, possession of a prescription drug outside of its original container, and with possession of drug paraphernalia.

State police held Froehlich on $10,000 bail for an arraignment on the criminal charges later that day in Danbury Superior Court.

Burglary/Larceny

Police are investigating the theft of multiple items from a Paugussett Road home in Sandy Hook.

Sometime on either May 7 or 8, someone entered the house and stole appliances, an all-terrain vehicle, and an air compressor, police said. Considering the items which were stolen, the thief would have needed a truck or a van to cart away the goods, police said.

DUI Charge

Police report they stopped motorist Gretchen Tatum-Todd, 52, of 20 West Street about 10:30 pm May 7, on Sugar Street because the brake lamps on the vehicle that she was driving were not functioning.

Police said that on investigating, they noticed the smell of alcohol in the vehicle and then had Tatum-Todd perform field sobriety tests. Police then lodged charges against Tatum-Todd of driving under the influence, failure to have operable brake lamps, and failure to present proof of automotive insurance.

After processing, police released her on $155 bail for a May 24 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Three-Car Crash

A three-car accident took place at the intersection of Route 34 and Pole Bridge Road about 2:48 pm May 10.

Police said motorist David Gould, 47, of 27 Gelding Hill Road, who was driving a 2000 Toyota Camry eastward on Route 34, stopped in preparing to turn left onto Pole Bridge Road.

At that time, motorist Edward S. Rowland, Jr, 45, of 55 Sugar Street, was driving a 1988 Ford Escort westward on Route 34, police said.

Also at that time, motorist Tina Skalkos, 39, of 4 Misty Vale Road , who was driving a 2000 Nissan Maxima, was stopped at a stop sign at the end of Pole Bridge Road, police said.

The Toyota then turned left toward Pole Bridge Road in front of the oncoming Ford. The Ford veered to the right to avoid a collision, but struck the Toyota, pushing the Toyota into the Nissan, police said.

Rowland, who was injured in the collision, was transported by ambulance to Danbury Hospital for treatment, police said.

Police issued Gould an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way.

 

Chrysler Vs Subaru

Motorist Elizabeth Alberico, 62, of 172 Julia Court, who was driving a 2002 Subaru Forester, was stopped on southbound Walnut Tree Hill Road at its intersection with Church Hill Road about 10:45 am May 10, police said.

Motorist Lindsay Chimileski, 18, of 22 Walnut Tree Hill Road, who was driving a 1996 Chrysler Sebring, was stopped behind the Subaru, police said. The Chrysler then rolled forward into the rear end of the Subaru, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Chimileski a written warning for following too closely.

Church Hill Road

About 2:18 pm May 10, westbound motorist Gabrielle Naglieri, 24, of 96 Head O’ Meadow Road, who was driving a 2003 Honda CRV, was stopped for traffic near 29 Church Hill Road, police report.

Westbound motorist Sara O’Brien, 22, of Milford, who was driving a 1999 Ford Taurus, then struck the Honda from behind, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued O’Brien an infraction ticket for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and for a driver’s license violation.

Truck Vs Truck

Motorist Stephen Poklemba, 51, of Southbury, who was driving a commercial dump truck, pulled out from a stop sign on Philo Curtis Road to turn right onto Pole Bridge Road at about 10:12 am May 9, and was struck by a 2001 Toyota pickup truck, which was backing up in that intersection, police said.

Motorist Robert Laneville, 42, of 39 Swamp Road was driving the Toyota, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Laneville a written warning for unsafe backing.
