'Mulvaneys' At Next Booth Book Discussion
âMulvaneysâ At Next Booth Book Discussion
The daytime book group at C.H. Booth Library in Newtown will be meeting next on Monday, July 9, from 1 to 2:30 pm, to discuss We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates. The meeting will take place on the third floor, in the special collections room.
The novel tells the story of the Mulvaney family, a family blessed by all that makes life sweet â a hard working father, a loving mother, three fine sons, and a bright, pretty daughter. They are confident in their love for one another and their position in the rural community of Mt Ephraim, New York.
But something happens on Valentineâs Day 1976: an incident that is hushed up in the town and never spoken of in the Mulvaney home, and rends the fabric of their family life with tragic consequences.
We Were the Mulvaneys waos a 1996 New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year as well as a selection for Oprahâs Book Club.
Attendees need not read the entire book to participate in and enjoy the discussion.
On August 13, the group will meet to discuss The Missing World by Margot Livesy, and on September 10, Kazuo Ishiguroâs Remains of the Day will be discussed.
