The Biggest Difference
The Biggest Difference
To the Editor:
The other day I walked outside â that day it was freezing cold â without wearing my hat, mittens, or scarf. âIâm only going to the mailbox,â I thought. Then I ventured out. My ears burned from the cold winds, I could barely unclench my fists to manipulate my fingers to open the mailbox, and the chill in the air rushed down my neck and all through my body. I grabbed the mail and pulled it up through my coat sleeves and took off for the house as fast as I could run.
That bitter cold day was when I truly realized the significant impact that the Mitten Tree makes each year to so many unnamed. To say that these gifts of hats, mittens, and scarves have been a real blessing to those in need is an understatement.
To all those who contributed to the Mitten Tree (and for many of you this is your eighth year contribution), on behalf of the members of the Newtown Police Department, I canât begin to thank you enough for the outpouring of generosity once again.
Sometimes what seems to be the smallest act of kindness really makes the biggest difference in the world.
Sincerely,
Officer Maryhelen McCarthy
