SOUTH WINDSOR – It took the Newtown High School volleyball team three years to return to the CIAC Class L state tournament and – on Monday in South Windsor – the Nighthawks made it clear they weren’t about to waste it.

The 24th-ranked ‘Hawks upset 9th-ranked South Windsor, 3-1, in the qualifying round of the state tournament and – in an interesting twist of fate – earned a trip to Masuk to face the 8th-ranked Pantherettes on Thursday (after press time).

For those who have short memories, Newtown defeated Masuk, 3-1, on October 27 in the most thrilling match of the entire 2001 season – right there in the quarterfinals of the South-West Conference tournament.

In the tough win over South Windsor (15-9, 16-14, 14-16, 15-1) Kate Anderheggen had 12 kills and five blocks to lead the ‘Hawks. Ally Gellert added nine kills and six aces while Anne Schneider had 25 assists and six digs.

South Windsor finished the regular season 15-3.

As did Masuk.

And in the space of eight days, the ‘Hawks (9-8 during the regular season, 11-9 overall) beat them both. But to repeat the feat, the ‘Hawks will have to turn in the same (near epic) performance they did against Masuk when players like Stephanie Logan had 13 kills and six blocks and Caitlyn Elf had 13 kills and 16 assists.
