German Choral Group Visiting Danbury

DANBURY — The award-winning German choral group Koelner Kantorei will perform Tuesday, November 2, at 7 pm, at St Peter’s Church.

The concert is one of only four US appearances by the 45-voice a cappella chorus. The group has won numerous awards throughout Europe and Asia for its unique performances of sacred music under the direction of its founder and conductor, Volker Hempfling.

Koelner Kantorei, which translated means “chamber chorus near Cologne,” most recently represented Germany at a European festival and won first place in the polyphonic music division over choirs from New Zealand, Japan, Spain, the United States, France, Finland, the Philippines and South Africa.

Koelner Kantorei’s Danbury performance will offer psalm settings including that of Psalm 67, “God Be Merciful to Us,” by Danbury’s own Charles E. Ives. Other settings include Psalm 13, “How Long, O Lord”; Psalm 81, “Exultate Deo”; Psalms 46 and 72, “The Works of the Lord”; and Psalm 130, “Aus der Tiefe rufe ich Herr.” Works will be sung in English, Latin or German.

Tickets for the November 2 concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students in grades 12 and under. Advance tickets may be purchased by calling CityCenter Danbury at 792-1711 or Danbury Music Centre at 748-1716. St Peter’s Church is at 121 Main Street.
