A Colorful Season

Fall fills Newtown with the crisp scent of leaves, their colors swirling as they drift downward to crunch underfoot.

The autumn yellows mixed with bursts of red and orange highlights clashed against the sea-blue sky on October 10. Travelers on Route 302 found Castle Hill Farm’s corn maze and pumpkin patch, and next passed Ferris Creamery where youth soccer teams and parents had stopped for ice cream after a game. Farther along, the Newtown Country Mill was dressed up with mums, gourds, pumpkins, and scarecrows who greeted customers with warm amber shades and yellow and pink pastels.

In the center of town the panorama of agricultural life spans the horizon visible from Queen Street. Hay wagons sit at rest in fields dipping toward a faraway tree-line. Breaking the deep blue sky above were clouds like burst popcorn. Around the corner on Mile Hill South Road sat rolled bales of hay left at random in a field. Parents walked their children past brick façades awash with late afternoon sun. Throughout town residents gathered leaves into piles and reached for sweaters as temperatures brought a chill to Newtown.
