CHINESE FURNITURE AND SCHOLARSâ OBJECTS OPENS AT MD FLACKS MARCH 13 w/1 cut
avv/gs set 2/20 #729613
NEW YORK CITY â MD Flacks Oriental Furniture and Art will present âClassical Chinese Furniture and Scholarsâ Objects from the Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, Seventeenth to Eighteenth Centuries,â on view March 13â24 at 38 East 57th Street, sixth floor.
The exhibition includes some 20 pieces in various materials such as huanghuali, zitan, marble, jumu (southern elm), pear wood and walnut. The exhibition is staged to coincide with Asia Week, other dealer exhibitions and the International Asian Art Fair.
One of the leading dealers in Chinese furniture, MD Flacks will offer a rare and important pair of tapered huanghuali cabinets from an American private collection. The cabinets were formerly in the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture, Renaissance, Calif., and sold at auction in New York in 1996.
The exhibition includes a rare pair of huanghuali square stools with C-shaped legs, a rare form, similar to a pair once in the collection of the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture, and a rare and unusual zitan side table with cloud-head spandrels and a carved cloud-head panel between the legs.
Another highlight is an early solid top altar table with solid legs that are carved with pierced openings. This piece is almost certainly from the Ming Dynasty (early-mid Seventeenth Century) and has a massive, bold presence and aged surfaces.
MD Flacks also specializes in scholarsâ objects, a field that as grown steadily over the last 30 years and is now much sought after. Scholarsâ objects are the tabletop treasures that would adorn a scholar-officialâs painting table.
An unusually large and elegant zitan table stand is part of the selection of scholars objects on view in this New York exhibition, which also includes a rare pair of nanmu leaf-shaped wall plaques, a wooden scholarâs rock and a rare bamboo skin scholarâs chest.
