Redgrave To Read âTorture Teamâ At Long Wharf
NEW HAVEN â Did the United States government sanction torture in the wake of 9/11? Legendary actor and activist Vanessa Redgrave will join international lawyer and acclaimed author Philippe Sands to examine this question in a staged presentation of his book Torture Team. The one night only special event will take place on Sunday, January 16, on Long Wharfâs Stage II.
Curtain is 7 pm. Tickets are $75, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Center for Victims of Torture. Additional cast members and panelists will be announced at a later date.
Torture Team tells the story of Mr Sandsâ investigation of Donald Rumsfeldâs 2002 memo authorizing the new interrogation techniques that led to torture at Guantanamo Bay and beyond.
Using Sandsâ book as a basis, video clips from Judgment at Nuremberg, â24â and material from Murat Kurnazâs Five Years of My Life: An Innocent Man in Guantanamo, a memoir chronicling his unjust imprisonment at the hands of US authorities, Mr Edelstein has put together a provocative evening of theatre. Two years of interviews and research resulted in the publication of Torture Team.
