Why We Need A Third Party

In Newtown

To the Editor:

This year’s election offers a historic opportunity to change and improve the course of our town government. That’s because there is a choice on Election Day. You have the opportunity to move on from those who have been in power for the past 12 years by choosing the Independent Party of Newtown.

Ask yourself: why has it become necessary for a group of Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and Unaffiliateds to band together to form a third party? Why have so many among us chosen a path that puts us into a hornet’s nest of political confrontation? Why would ordinary citizens, who are just like you, risk their reputations to make things better? Why would we put so much of our energy, our efforts, and our ideas into seeing things done differently?

None of the candidates of the Independent Party initially set out to seek public office. Most answered the call to serve the community is some small way. We joined the PTA, Economic Development Commission, Planning and Zoning, or coached sports. I joined the Public Building & Site Commission (PB&SC). Then, many of us became very disappointed to find out how things got done or not done in town, and we found that when we tried to help, our ideas were not welcome.

My tenure as chairman of PB&SC put me right in the thick of things as we managed the new town hall and the high school expansion. I was shocked and outraged when prominent leaders sabotaged the high school project while at the same time forged ahead with the new town hall; both in direct conflict with the wishes of so many among us. I saw how leading members of both parties ignored the results of the last election and chose to stay the course set by the previous administration.

So I have chosen to step up for what I know in my heart is the right thing to do for Newtown, for what the community at large supports. I stand side by side with 16 other candidates from the Independent Party offering a real alternative to those other two parties who have provided very little choice to you in the past. And I’m proud to do it.

So ask yourself; why do the IPN candidates have so much passion? Could it be because we are truly committed to doing the things we say that Newtown needs done? Please vote Independent this year and give us an opportunity to represent you. Visit us at www.IPN2009.org for information about all our great candidates and detailed plans for a better future for Newtown.
