Girl Scouts Song

Katherine (Carmody) Kearns stopped in at The Bee this week in response to Jan Howard’s August 11 feature, 70 Years of Girl Scouting in Newtown. She brought in the words to a song she remembers singing as a Girl Scout.

She believes the song was written by the late Rev Paul A. Cullens, whose wife, Agnes, organized the first Girl Scout troop in Newtown in 1930. Rev Cullens was instrumental in bringing Boy Scouting to Newtown. The song is as follows:

Girl Scouts of Newtown,

Laurel Troop so true,

Working and smiling,

Never, never blue.

“Be prepared” our motto,

Some good deed each day,

All day long we are singing,

This is what we say:

After we’ve left our girlhood,

And the world we meet,

All of the lessons in scouting,

Will help make our lives more sweet.

Many a heart will be lifted,

Many a home full of cheer,

By the friendships made in scouting,

‘mongst the girls we loved so dear.
