GBYO Annual Young Peopleâs Concert, Sat.
FAIRFIELD â The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra (GBYO) will perform its annual Young Peopleâs Concert on Saturday, March 15, at 11:30 am, at Roger Ludlowe Middle School, 689 Unquowa Road.
Theme of this yearâs concert is âFeel The Beat.â The narrated concert, especially suited for children in grades K-5 and their parents, will demonstrate the Latin roots in music. Audience members will discover, experience and âplayâ the rhythms during this interactive concert.
The annual concert is narrated so that instruction as well as entertainment is included. Â Each year the concert focuses on a central theme such as the instruments of the orchestra, music and dance, music with a story, and musical pictures.
The Principal Orchestra, the most advanced of the four GBYO orchestras and under the direction of GBYO Music Director Theresa Diaz McGee, will perform highlights from Leonard Bernsteinâs award winning musical West Side Story. Additional works will include the exciting gypsy âRitual Fire Danceâ from Spanish composer Manuel de Fallaâs ballet, El Amor Brujo (Love the Magician).
Also performing on Saturday will be the Symphony Orchestra, Concert Orchestra and String Orchestra.
Founded in 1961 the GBYO, with four developmentally sequential orchestras, offers musical experiences for young musicians in the area. The 245 members in the four ensembles were chosen by competitive auditions in late August. The members, in grades 4-12, play orchestral instruments and reside in 25 communities in Fairfield and New Haven counties, including a number of students who live in Newtown and Sandy Hook. Students who are in the orchestra are always expected to maintain good school grades.
Tickets for the concert are $6 for adults and $4 for students and may be purchased at the Roger Ludlowe Middle School on the day of performance or by contacting the GBYO Executive Director Barbara Upton at 203-459-4249.
