Farmers’ Market And Pick-Your-Own Brochures

HARTFORD — As farmers’ markets get into full swing and families look for healthy, low-cost activities for both adults and children, the Connecticut Department of Agriculture is offering updated versions of two popular brochures to help residents find the bounty.

Connecticut Farmers’ Market 2009 provides information about 120 farmers’ markets across the state, sorted by county. Pick Your Own Fruits & Vegetables lists 79 locations offering pick-your-own crops. including fruits, vegetables, flowers, pumpkins, and Christmas trees.

Both documents can be downloaded from the Department of Agriculture’s website at http://www.ct.gov/doag/site.

“Anyone looking for sources of fresh, local food can benefit from these guides,” said Connecticut Commissioner of Agriculture F. Philip Prelli. “Visiting a farmers’ market and picking your own crops are great ways to savor a summer morning or afternoon. Families can spend quality time together and take home quality food, all while enjoying beautiful, bucolic scenery and fresh air. These are terrific activities for residents of all ages.”

Brochures are distributed to the 169 town halls and libraries throughout the state, and to all Connecticut county extension offices and USDA offices. They also are available electronically at www.CTGrown.gov (click on “Publications” at the left side of the page).
