To the Editor:

As a longstanding Newtowner myself, I have known Joe Borst for many years. While there are many reasons that I support Joe’s candidacy, two points in particular make it clear that Joe is right for Newtown at this point in time.

First, Joe is an honest, plain-spoken guy that can be counted on to state his true beliefs. At a time when political maneuvering has gone unchecked in this country, and most candidates will say anything to get elected, we know where Joe stands on the issues — just ask him. You can agree with him or not (and I do), but what he says comes from the heart. He truly has the best interests of Newtown in mind, and seeks no glory beyond the satisfaction that comes from a job well done.

Second, Joe believes in the managed growth of Newtown, and I am confident that his sense of fiscal responsibility will rein in the rapid growth of taxes and rampant residential development we have seen in recent years.

Joe has been actively involved in Newtown’s community and government for most of the last 50 years. During that time, he has earned the respect and friendship of many. As first selectman, Joe’s wisdom and steady hand will indeed work to Newtown’s benefit.
