Special Advent Service For The Grieving
Special Advent Service For The Grieving
REDDING â One would hope the Christmas season is a joyful one: every year, for every one. But that is not the case.
In fact, for those experiencing a sense of loss or sadness, Christmas can be a particularly lonely, even painful, time of year that unintentionally reminds people of the cheer they are simply not feeling.
As such, The First Church of Christ Congregational will offer its fourth annual Advent Service for the Grieving on Wednesday, December 12, in the sanctuary at 25 Cross Highway. Prelude music will begin shortly after 7 pm, and the service will begin at 7:30 and last approximately 40 minutes.
All are welcome at this special service, whether they are church members or not.
âThis service addresses and honors the many ways that people can feel out of step with the joy we would otherwise hope to feel leading up to Christmas,â noted Senior Minister the Reverend Dr Dean Ahlberg. âWhether a personâs sense of loss is recent or long remembered; whether it is from a death, divorce, job loss, or some other deep upset, this special Advent Service for the Grieving offers an opportunity, through prayers and readings, reflections and candle light, to lift our grief to God, to receive the assurance that God recognizes and shares our sorrows, and to receive the comfort and strength to sustain us.â
âChristmas is a time when we most wish for the love, relationships, security, and hope that can often elude us,â added Associate Minister the Reverend Jeffrey Braun. âThe chance to gather with those feeling a similar burden inspires both solidarity and relief. Each year, weâve been struck by the courage of those who attend and by the deep thanks they offer for the service.â
The candlelight service will include reflective music, prayer, select readings, silent meditation, and the opportunity to light a candle to commemorate loved ones or in the spirit of a special prayer.
