First Selectman, Selectman

Candidates: Why We Are Running

To the Editor:

It is a great honor to be endorsed by the Independent Party of Newtown as its candidates for the first selectman and selectman seats in the November 8 election. Over the next two months, we will be making a case as to why you should cast your vote for us to lead Newtown.

We believe Newtown’s political atmosphere has benefited greatly from IPN’s presence. The elections prior to 2007 provided choices limited to handpicked candidates with similar views that faced little or no competition. There would be no competitive race for first selectman in this year’s election if not for IPN fielding a candidate. IPN’s ability to offer candidates who provide a distinct choice for the electorate will continue to improve local government.

IPN issued a platform in the 2007 and 2009 elections. Choice and competition resulted in more detailed platform points from the established Democratic and Republican Town Committees, many of which now echo IPN positions.

We will wage a very competitive race for the first selectman and sSelectman seats. Newtown’s identify will be further defined by lively debates, discussions and dialogue during this campaign season. We look forward to hearing from the voters and we encourage you to support our efforts to provide “real choices” and “true leadership.”

There will be true positions of distinction between us and the other candidates. Foremost is our pledge to reduce the municipal budget by five percent over the next two years.

IPN candidates have never wavered from their core principles of accountability, checks and balances, and transparency. The Democrats this year call for “reason” in town government and the Republicans base their new election campaign on “character.” We ask you to look back over the past four years and think about which local government representatives have displayed leadership, character, reason, resolve and a spirit of cooperation, while also representing their convictions, firmly, but fairly. We think the 17 IPN representatives now involved in local government will score well based on that comparison. We will continue that same level of representation you have come to expect from IPN candidates if elected in November to represent your interests in our local government.

Sincerely,

Bill Furrier, First Selectman Candidate
