EVELYN STATSINGER ON VIEW AT VALERIE CARBERRY GALLERY w/1 cut
avv/gs set 4/23 #736940
CHICAGO, ILL. â Valerie Carberry Gallery presents a solo exhibition of Evelyn Statsingerâs paintings from the 1970s on view May 2âJune 21.
The show will include 12 paintings (all oil on canvas) many of which were exhibited in Statsingerâs groundbreaking show in 1978 at Artemisia Gallery. Seen today, one can observe the first meditations on what would become a central theme in Statsingerâs art: the rhythm and mystery of nature.
Before coming to Chicago in the 1940s, Statsinger studied briefly at the Art Students League in New York and the University of Toledo. In Chicago, she studied for a year at the University of Chicago and received her degree from the School of the Art Institute in 1949. At that time she was associated with Chicagoâs âMonster Rosterâ painters because of the distorted figures present in her early work.
In her mature work, Statsinger relinquishes readily identifiable forms such as the figure in favor of fantasy forms abstracted from nature. Through these forms, arranged within highly organized and complex environments of pattern and texture, Statsinger translates her experiences of the natural world.
With a palette of quiet earth tones accented with select intense hues, Statsinger creates a variety of spatial illusions and timeless emotional climates in her work. Art historian and critic Dennis Adrian keenly describes Statsingerâs painting as imbued with a âcurious inner illumination that affords them a compelling fascination and enigmatic charm.â
