NEWINGTON – On a cold, wet and blustery November morn, the Newtown girls’ 11-and-under travel soccer team saw its dream of a CJSA State Cup championship slip away to Avon during a penalty kick shootout on Field #3 at Newington High School.

Though it came to a disappointing end (2-1 in favor of Avon), for some 90 minutes of regulation and overtime action the Lightning played quite well.

The locals were the first to break open what had been a fairly tight, midfield battle when Kailee Dunnigan popped a shot from just outside the penalty box and inside the left post. Another great scoring opportunity, coming off a beautiful cross from Sarah Lynch, was stymied, though, by the Avon goaltender.

The Lightning did a good job of withstanding the rush from a couple of speedy Avon players, thanks to the efforts of midfielders Megan Meyer and Shelby Tolla and defenders Meghan Brophy, Meghan Korchman and Helene Sorensen.

All did a nice job supporting goaltenders Siena Cicarelli and Dale Shearin.

Nevertheless, the Blue Thunder did break through about 13 minutes in the second half, scoring on a beautiful through ball right down the middle of the field. Newtown dodged a bullet several minutes later, two, when a long Avon serve bounced in the penalty area and over the cross bar.

Avon kept the pressure up through the end of the half and through two 10-minute overtime sessions, but the Newtown defense did not buckle. In the penalty kick shootout, though, Avon was just a little bit sharper and escaped with the U11 championship.

In regular season action, the Lightning earned a 1-1 draw with Stamford (in a game played just hours after the dramatic State Cup final) and a 5-1 win over Bethel.

In the draw with Stamford, Jessica Keller scored the lone goal as Taylor Lafave and Michelle Zarifis had good all-around games while Meyer and Kate Fallon were tough in goal. In the win over Bethel, Lynch scored four times and Amy Martinelli scored once. Cassie Fischer and Raquel Crespo helped keep up the offensive pressure while Keller, Emily Riley and Cicarelli were a force in midfield.

Caroline Tanner and Shearin were strong in the nets.

NOTE: Talk about commitment – not only by a player, but by her parents! Taylor LaFave and her family recently moved to Montreal, Canada, but Taylor and her dad, John, drove down to Newington last weekend so Taylor could play with her teammates in the CJSA Girls U11 State Cup championship.
