Travel Soccer Team Competes In Tourney

The Newtown White Lightning U11 Travel Soccer Team recently traveled to the Westport Indoor Tournament and placed fourth among six teams in its division with a 1-3-1 record. The Lightning was led by Clay Gattey who had two goals and Ryan King who had the first goal of the tournament.

Newtown defeated Westport 2-1 in the tourney opener. King and Gattey scored goals; Kaj Djonne and Gattey had assists; and Kevin Ovendorf played great in goal with eight saves.

Newtown tied Norwalk 1-1 in the second game. Gattey scored and Luca Imbimbo earned an assist. Knute Johnson and Nathyn Horvath were great in the midfield.

In the third game of the tourney, Brookfield defeated Newtown 3-0. Michael Cook and Michael Biancardi played great in the midfield. Graham Hubbert and Constant Gregoire were strong on offense but it wasn’t enough to overcome Brookfield, which went undefeated in the tournament.

In the fourth game, Weston edged Newtown 1-0. Anthony Vournazos was aggressive in the midfield, Kevin Droniak was a power on defense, shutting down Weston’s advances, and Ovendorf made big savesto keep the game close.

In the fifth and final game, Ridgefield blanked Newtown 2-0. In a hard-fought game, Ridgefield scored two late goals to seal the win. King, Gattey, Imbimbo and Djonne played well in defeat.
