Hawk Swimmers Perform Well In Setback To Pomperaug, Defeat Stratford
Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team, after a 6-0 start, suffered a 101-85 loss at unbeaten Pomperaug of Southbury on October 2. The Nighthawks rebounded with a 92-81 victory over visiting Stratford on October 7.
Newtown Coach Zach Gauvin noted that his team had plenty to be pleased with in the meet with Pomperaug.
“This was our first loss of the season but it was by far the fastest meet we have swum all season. The girls swam and dove tough in every event and put up a great fight against one of the best teams in the state,” Gauvin said.
The Nighthawks set a team record in the 200 yard freestyle relay race as the teams of Mary Hufziger, Eliza Eggleston, Mandy Mele, and Amy Martinelli finished in a time of 1:41.88.
That was a record that had been set back in 1997, the year most of the senior girls were born, Gauvin noted.
“We also had a ton of new personal bests, and new SWC and state qualifying swims. Overall I couldn’t have asked for more. The girls swam and dove with unbelievable toughness that will certainly help us in the championship season to come,” the Newtown coach added.
