Swim Team Caps Off Regular Season With Win
Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team concluded the regular season with a 94-81 win over visiting Masuk of Monroe on October 21. Newtown finished the campaign with 9-1 mark as the team gets ready for the South-West Conference championships; the diving competition will take place at Pomperaug High School in Southbury at 5:30 pm on October 29, and the swim events will unfold at Masuk High at 1 pm on November 1.
Newtown jumped out to the early lead against Masuk as the 200 yard medley relay team of Megan McDonald, Annika Fagerholm, Eliza Eggleston, and Mandy Mele finished in first place with a time of 1:59.98.
McDonald won the 200 individual medley race in 2:20.92, and Amy Martinelli captured the top spot in the 50 free in 25.94. Newtown carried a 39-23 lead into the diving competition and came out of it with a 52-23 advantage. Kari Djonne earned 277.45 points for first place.
Eggleston won the 100 butterfly event in 1:04.51, and Martinelli took first in the 100 free in a time of 57.54. The 200 free relay contingent of Hannah Delia, Eggleston, Mele, and Martinelli, was first in 1:52.86. With the outcome of the meet determined, Newtown exhibitioned the final three events.
