Swim And Dive Squad Defeats Joel Barlow

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team won its season-opening meet, defeating visiting Joel Barlow of Redding 97-80 on September 11. The Nighthawks built a 97-42 lead through nine events before exhibitioning the final three.

In the 200 yard medley relay race, Newtown had a one-two finish to get things started. The team of Gianna Terracino, Madeline Carter, Casey Klein, and Mary Hufziger earned first place in a time of 2:04.72. Megan Olszewski, Emma Brantl, Julia DiMartino, and Amanda Berry placed second in 2:06.01. Newtown’s third relay squad was disqualified.

The 200 freestyle race was won by Bridget Duero in a time of 2:08.65. Kristina Goeree placed fourth in 2:25.23, and Amanda Trampasch was sixth in 2:34.62.

Brantl won the 200 individual medley competition, making her final touch in a time of 2:32.66. Cecilia Schoeni was third in 2:39.42. Terracino placed fourth in 2:42.11.

In the 50 freestyle race, Hufziger came out on top in a time of 26.37. Berry was fourth in 30.55. Keeley Bauman was sixth in 32.02.

Newtown had a strong showing in the diving competition as Kari Djonne, Gillian Eckwall, and Emma Wolfman registered a one, two, four finish, respectively.

Out of the break, the swimming events continued to yield first- and second-place finishes. In the 100 butterfly race, Klein was first in 1:06.51, and DiMartino was runner-up in 1:10.64. Berry came in fourth in 1:18.53.

In the 100 free race, NHS logged a one-two-three result. Hufziger led the way in 57.64, Terracino was next in 1:02.92, and Olszewski finished in 1:04.58.

Carter placed second in the 500 freestyle event, finishing in a time of 5:49.53, Duero was third in 5:39.66, and Schoeni came in fourth in 6:15.53.

The 200 free relay contingent of Hufziger, Terracino, DiMartino, and Brantl was first in 1:52.03 as the Nighthawks clinched the team victory.

Other times are as follows: 200 free relay: Emma Riebe, Alexandra Ferris, Laura Carson, and Bauman, 2:03.03. 100 backstroke: Klein 1:08.36, Olszewski 1:16.30, Elise Johnson 1:17.96. 100 breaststroke: Carter 1:19.73, Brantl 1:20.51, Riebe 1:27.06. 400 free relay: DiMartino, Schoeni, Klein, and Duero 4:10.67; Berry, Trampasch, Melissa Nowak, and Goeree 4:35.39; Ferris, Kelly Garcia, Sophia Patelli, and Johnson 4:51.40.

The Nighthawks, after a week off from competition, will visit Weston on Friday, September 25, beginning at 4 pm. The next home meet is set for Tuesday, September 29, when New Milford visits for a 7 pm competition.
