Donald B. Burnell

Donald B. “Bud” Burnell, 80, husband of the late Rachel (Whitney) Burnell of 1 Russett Road, Sandy Hook, died September 11 in Danbury Hospital.

He was the father of David Burnell of Newtown.

He was born in Portland, Me., December 28, 1920, son of the late Samuel and Ruby (Williams) Burnell.

Mr Burnell lived in several towns in Maine including Naples and Skowhegan. He graduated from Skowhegan High School.

During World War II he served in the US Marine Corps, taking part in the Battle of Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. He was discharged as a Warrant Officer. He received an engineering degree from Michigan State University.

Mr Burnell was employed by General Waterworks Corp., first in Maine, followed by service in Arkansas and Philadelphia. He spent the last 30 years of his service in Newtown as vice president of the Northeast Region.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Mechanics Falls, Me., and a former member of the Odd-Fellows and the Lions Club of Pine Bluff, Ark. He leaves behind many good friends.

He is survived by another son, Duane Burnell of Pacific Grove, Calif.; three grandchildren, Allyson, Abbigail and Colby Burnell; and one niece, Barbara Jackson of Boothbay Harbor, Me.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Maine.

There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made to Marine Corps Toys-for-Tots Program. Arrangements by Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.
