NIGHTMARE 4, RHODE ISLAND RAYS 1: Chelsea Morin scored a pair of goals and Alex Helfer and Brittany Meier added one apiece to lift the Nightmare over Rhode Island. Carrie Lipnick recorded a pair of assists. Allison Frobey was outstanding at sweeper while Kristi Johnston and Erin OâDell played well at marking back. Ali Smith and Kim Allen played well in the nets for the Nightmare, who raised their record to 1-2.
NIGHTMARE 6, BURLINGTON 2: After a rather lackluster first half in which the Nightmare allowed a Burlington goal in the first 30 seconds, the two-time State Cup champions rebounded with a resounding 6-2 thumping. Alex Helfer scored at the 30-minute mark off a beautiful feed from Chelsea Morin to tie the game 1-1 at half. In the second, the Nightmare added five goals in the first 20 minutes â with two from Helfer, two from Kelly Collier, and one from Carrie Lipnick off a corner kick. Kelly Haines controlled the back along with Allison Frobey and Kate Fenton. Brittany Meier and April Scheuerell had strong second halves at midfield. Ali Smith and Kim Allen minded the nets.
BOYS U14 PREMIER
NEWTOWN 3, EASTERN FC 2: The match up against the Eastern FC finally took place, for the Strikers, in 90-degree heat, after being canceled, because of snow, just three weeks ago. The Strikers pushed Mike Vanasse forward and he managed to net two goals in the first half, sandwiched around Easternâs two of their own. Matthew McFadden scored the game winner for the Strikers, in the second half, while a strong defense rallied in front of Andrew Fiscella in net and shut down Eastern. Mike Bonsignore, David Anderson and Jeremy Barczak all played well on defense with Peter Dittmar, Sean Rawson and Brian Smith helping to control the center.

Lagrange Tournament
After placing second in the Glastonbury Tournament a week ago, the United captured first at the Langrange Tournament:
UNITED 0, LAGRANGE JAGUARS 0: A defensive battle was led, for Newtown, by Kevin Quinn and Ryan Bigham. On offense, Mike Nastri and Caio Kowarick put forth solid efforts.
UNITED 2, MINISINK TOMAHAWKS 0: Nick Mentessana scored a pair of goals to lead the way. Tony Perreta and Matt Spinner provided offensive pressure throughout the match.
UNITED 3, LAGRANGE SCORPIONS 0: Excellent passing and ball control was the key to this game. Marcus Tracy scored all three goals that led the United to the win. Russ Cinicola, Ryan Davies, and Billy Mantz provided solid support at midfield.
UNITED 1, NORTH ROCKLAND RAPTORS 0: The defense stepped up again and held the Raptors scoreless. Scott Shpunt, Ryan Bigham, and Brian Miles did the hard work on defense while Adam Drummond was solid in goal. The Unitedâs lone goal came off the foot of Miles, on a direct kick.

State Cup
ROCKETS 9, RIDGEFIELD 1: The ninety degree heat seemed to fire-up the Newtown Rockets even more in the State Cup game. Tara Gaston, Maria Cinquegrana, Kayla Mesko and Tori Thomas shared goalkeeping for the win. Siobhan Cooper found the net four times, Mary Anders had a hat trick, Erin Clark and Maria Cinquegrana each scored one goal apiece. Mary Grace Ober and Caitlin Hansen kept the midfield on a power roll. The defense was energized by Casey Frobey and Alex Konneker.

KNIGHTS 9, WOLCOTT 0: The Knights flexed their muscles Sunday and came away with a convincing win. Newtownâs ball-control style of play opened up many scoring chances while keeping Wolcott off the scoreboard. Chris Hoagland started the scoring barrage with a goal (later adding two more for a hat trick), Alex Meisel slammed in two, Marc Doherty weaved through the defense for a goal, Will Brooks expertly guided a left-footer to the back of the net, Jonathan Hartlett blasted one in, and Louis Ritzinger punched in a rebound for the final tally.

State Cup
NITROS 4, GLASTONBURY 1: A cooling rain gave the Nitros the edge they needed to put Glastonbury out of the running for State Cup Saturday. Kristi Nowak and Jennifer Greenwood provided one goal apiece early in the game, followed by Kyla Miles and Maggie DeMarco, each with one more. Nicole Sieber and DeMarco supported the offense with assists while Erica Vacaro and Rachael Perretta did a great job at securing the defensive end.

RAGE 9, SOUTHBURY 1: The Rage overwhelmed Southbury with a strong all-around effort. Newtownâs defense, led by Mike Kennedy, Justin Durelli, Mark Cinquegrana and Chris Nuelle completely stifled Southburyâs attack. The ball movement was crisp all day, leading to numerous scoring chances. Jack Quinn scored two goals, while Joe Rahtelli, Ryan McGrath, Michael Murphy, Nick Sando, Michael Klein, Brian Conroy and Ross MacLeod scored a goal a piece. Steve Marks was stingy in goal.
BOYS U10 TRAVEL
AFTERSHOCK 0, DANBURY 0: In one of their best defensive performances to date, the Aftershocj held last fallâs division-leading Danbury PAL team to a scoreless tie at Kenosia Field. Defender Eddie Gaddis consistently stymied Danbury attacks and goaltender Adam Margulies kept the ball away from the net with difficult saves and deep, booming punts. Sam Morrison controlled the ball on offense.
NEW FAIRFIELD 2, AFTERSHOCK 0: A late goal given up in the first half and another in the second half enabled New Fairfield to ease past the Aftershock. Colin Babbage, Chris Schreiber and Brendan Connor played well on offense and put several nice shots on goal . . . but just couldnât come away with a score.
VIPERS 4, BROOKFIELD 0: The Brookfield Bobcats pushed the limits of physical play with the Vipers and Newtown answered with quick ball movement and passing that netted three, first-half goals by Alex Bowen, Paul Andras and Nick Kallivrousis. Drew Taylor and Jason Smith kept the Viper attack enthusiastic and with Chris Meier and Kevin Davies making long runs from their defensive positions, the Bobcats could not get their offense into action. Max Hoaglandâs assaulting pressure on Brookfieldâs defense, caused numerous quick Bobcat passes that resulted in turnovers that the Vipers then controlled. Justin Miller netted the Viper fourth with only two minutes left.
VIPERS 3, SOUTHBURY 1: The Vipers fell behind quickly to an aggressive Southbury team, but Danny Smith maintained his composure in net and managed to shut the Cobras down for the remainder of the half. Kevin Davies and Jason Smithâs defense boosted the Vipers and only 45 seconds into the second half, Paul Andras tied it up for Newtown. Chris Meier helped the Vipers take over control of the game Later, Justin Miller placed a long ball into the net, through the hands of the Cobra goalie and shortly thereafter dropped a ball back to Kevin Troy, who laced a left footed ball into the upper corner putting Newtown up 3-1. Tony Kallivrousis provided quick runs down the flanks, for Newtown and Alex Bowen made two impressive saves in front of the net.

GIRLS C/D DIVISION
STARS 4, GATORADES 4: Katie Fuller blasted a ball from the grasp of Star goalie Kate Mayer â whose hard nosed goaltending would frustrate many subsequent scoring attempts â to give the Gatorades an early lead in this hard fought, highly physical, CD Division battle. Elizabeth (Biz) Bowen replied with a goal for the Stars (her first of two on the day, along with a key assist), before Collette Naglieri scored another to give the Gatorades a 2-1 halftime lead. The Stars came roaring back however, scoring off the foot of Jessica Paynter to tie while Alicia Rogersâ aggressive style of defense and Olga Virgallaâs midfield play kept the Gatorade attack in its cage. But the latter was not to last, with Katie Fuller striking again in advance of Biz Bowenâs second goal, followed by another Gatorade score from Kristen Landofi before Catlin Williams fired one home for the Stars to leave the score knotted at four.
DYNAMITES 6, CHEETAHS 1: Sally Tabler and Aileen Kerns scored two goals apiece while Elaine McCafferty and Christine Glander scored one goal each to lead the Dynamites to the win. Jackie Gutbrod and Mandy Black were strong on defense. For the Cheetahs, Stefanie Prorock scored the goal as Ashley_Gabor,_Jen Badillo and goaltender Erin_Daily led the defense.
BOYS E DIVISION
FLASH 3, WOLFPACK 2: In a seesaw battle, Kurt Nacewicz scored twice for the Flash with Matthew Yakush adding the go-ahead score on a penalty kick late in the second half. Nicholas Maccharoli and Stephen Dworkin played well on defense. For the Wolfpack, Danny Cartisano and Michael Hahn each scored while Zack Seaman and Henry Sims anchored the defense.
THUNDERBIRDS 6, PYTHONS 2: P.J. Cochrane led the scoring for the Thunderbirds with three goals. Matt Samuelson, Chris Salvatore and Kevin Spieker each added a goal. Craig Schreckenghaust scored two for the Pythons. Ian Cooper played well on offense and Kyle Hufziger and Peter Kraus played well on defense.
TIGERSHARKS 4, SCORPIONS 1: Anthony Florez lead the âShark attack with two goals off assists from Blake Barreto and Rob DeFilippe. Barreto checked in with a goal of his own, and Greg Hill drove a bouncing center-pass into the upper left hand corner of the goal to finish the scoring for the Tigersharks. Justin Carrotti got one back for the Scorpions. Kyle Shevlin played strong the entire game and Matt Norris kept the game close with some great saves in goal.
DOGNABBERS 6, WOLFPAK 1: Michael Kerns scored two goals while Connor McManus, Mickey Fay, Jamie Post and Matt Boland scored one apiece to lead the âNabbers to the win. For the âPak, Michael Hahn scored the goal while Ben Speigal and Greg Larnerd were solid in goal. Dan Cartisano played well at right wing.
DOGNABBERS 4, SCORPIONS 1: Mickey Fay scored a pair of goals while Matt Boland and Danny Quinn chipped in with a goal apiece to lead the âNabbers. Tucker LaPak had a great game in goal. For the Scorpions, Matt Norris scored the goal while Ryan Morrissey was excellent on defense. Doug McLeod and Justin Carotti also supported the offense.

BUMBLEBEES 1, DRAGONS 0: Eva Cerreta scored the lone goal on a penalty kick to lift the âBees to the win. Jennifer Brills and Stephanie Soder both played well. For the Dragons, Christina Sanchez and Kendra OâConnor were solid on defense.
GIRLS F DIVISION
ROCKET POWER 2, UNICORNS 1: Rocket Power prevailed in a tough match played in intense heat. All the goals came in the fourth quarter, too. Kristyn Hydock put the âCorns ahead, 1-0, on a blast from 20 feet out but Marnie Thompson of the Power scored two goals in the final three minutes to steal the win. Jessica Tonucci, Gretchen Hoffman and Megan McGowan starred for the âCorns while Ava Rojo, Ashley Szabo and Jordyn Good helped propel the Power to the win.
TORNADOES 4, HURRICANES 0: Cassie David scored two goals while Kate Bowen and Christiane Buethe scored one each as the Tornadoes won the battle of the big storms. Molly Day anchored the defense. For the âCanes, Rebecca Jaroszewski, Meredith LaPerch,_Kaley Kruger and Zoe Seavey all played well.
BOYS F DIVISION
SENSATION 5, LASERS 4: Ryan Cahalane scored three goals and Connor Collier contributed a pair to lead the Sensation to the tough victory. Stephen Forgione had a fine defensive performance. For the Lasers, Tony Vaccaro, Matt Iassogna, Danny Greenwood and Ralph Sergiovani all scored.
BULLS 2, POKEMON 0: Under the blazing sun, Matt Narel and Kevin OâConnell scored for the Bulls. Colin Smith and Michael Cox led the defense with Bruce Dougherty covering goal. The Pokemon, led by Chris Bock and Matt Slattery, put up a strong defense in spite of the heat.
CHARIZARDS 3, SCORPIONS 2: Andrew Domingos scored a pair of goals and Keith McGrath added one to lead the Charizards to the win. Ben DâAgostino and goalie Daniel OâConnor led the defense. For the Scorpions, Tyler Edwards and Ethan Carotti scored the goals as Mikey Tobin and Shane Wartz both played well.
ROCKETS 3, ROCKETS 1: Josh Baron scored a pair of goals and Dan Clements added one to lead the Rockets. Tyler Webb and Anthony Corletto played well on D. For the Rockets, Matt Hill scored while Wesley Yllanes, Chris Gregory, and Joshua Zimmerman played well.
ROCKETS 3, WILDCATS 2: Alex Dinoto scored the winning goal with 30 seconds left to lift the Rockets. Josh Baron and Chris Marx also scored and Ben Miles played great defense. For the âCats, Brian Reszoly and Mike Cagganello scored the goals and Peter Walsh had two assists. Stephen Gardner was solid on D.
