At the same time (and in the same division), Jake DeVellis canned 33 points to lead the Wildcats to a 55-29 win over the Lakers.
There were a lot of other shining performances, too, as the Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball League (and travel teams) moved from 2003 to 2004 â
Travel
Boys 8th â
Newtown 65, Weston 47 â Kevin Troy and Greg Rodden combined for 27 points and played well on both ends of the floor to lead Newtown to the win. PJ Cochrane and Dan Smith played well defensively and contributed some key baskets.
Girls 7th â
Stamford 47, Newtown 42 â After only scoring two points in the first quarter, Newtown came back to play Stamford close the rest of the game. Nora Lynn Shimko led the way with 18 points and Jenna Legros chipped in 14 points. Newtown kept the game close with its full court press and aggressive defense. The defensive effort was led by Adelle Cerreta (three rebounds and two steals) and Kasey Schulz (tough man-to-man defense).
Girls 6th â
Norwalk 74, Newtown 22 â Newtown faced undefeated conference foe Norwalk and lost big. Newtown struggled with the full court pressure. Sara Kelley lead the scoring with 10 points while Kaitlin Marsden and Jennifer Dailey chipped in with six and four points, respectively. Susan Mason ripped down eight rebounds while Nicole Elias and Carolyn Fagan were also strong off the boards for the Lady Hawks.

Huskies 56, Yellow Submarines 32 â Erik Dreher canned 24 points and Julian Wahlberg dragged down 12 rebounds to lead the Huskies to the win. Ryan Hudock made four steals. For the Subs, Josh Baron popped in 10 points while Dan Berlinger, Robert Brautigam and Joel Minalgo played well.
Spurs 52, 76ers 34 â Kurtis Liska scored 17 points and Paul Andras added 16 to lift the Spurs past the Sixers. Jason Kostecki canned 11 points and TJ Faeth had a solid performance. For the Sixers. Kyle Wagner and Nick Garafalo combined for 18 points while Tom Jackman (five assists) and Nick Landfair (four steals) played well.
Wildcats 55, Lakers 29 â Jake DeVellis poured in 33 points to lead the Wildcats to the win. Ryan Golankiewicz and Tim Larsen chipped in with six points apiece while Brett LeBlanc played well. For the Lakers, Matt Mascolo had 19 points and Ryan Boucher had 12 rebounds. Chris Marks and Dan DeLaVega (eight steals) played well.
Jazz 44, Kings 38 â Alex Bowen popped in 15 points as the Jazz slipped past the Kings. For the Kings, David Manville had 20 points while Brett Mauro and Adam Schankman had six apiece. Chris Salvatore played well with three steals.

For the Knicks, Alex Stevens canned 10 points as Ian Doerr dished off eight assists. John Aminti had 12 rebounds and Christian Steimle played well on D.
Bullets 47, Nitro 34 â Conor Martin canned 18 points and Kyle McNamara grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bullets past the Nitro. Kris Kling dished off eight assists and Charlie Kerr had five steals. For the Nitro, Zack Varga popped in nine points. Dave Kopyscinski, Matt Brede and Matt Narel played well on offense.
Sonics 45, Rockets 37 â Harrison Gillis and Tyler Tarantino scored 11 points apiece to lead the Sonics to the win. Adam Margulies grabbed 14 rebounds, Tarantino had 13 boards, and Tyler Edwards dished off six assists. For the Rockets, Colin Babbage canned 21 points and Ryan Goodridge added 12. Nick Ciarelli, Chris Murphy and Ronald Swift played well.
Intermediate Boys

Gators 46, Celtics 25 â Dan Clement scored 12 points while Jack Kneisel and Nick Nazer scored six points apiece as the Gators defeated the Celtics. Nazer also had 12 rebounds while Spencer Gregoire made five steals. For the Celtics, Tony Vacaro and Brad Biscoe popped in six points apiece and Dana Hansen dished off six assists. Doug Brede and Jeff Keating played well on D.
Nighthawks 40, Sonics 24 â Jamey Tibbetts popped in 18 points to lead the Nighthawks to an easy win. Eric Thornberg and Kyle OâConnor combined for 16 points while Oliver Powers played well. For the Sonics, Ben Mahony and Thomas Murphy scored eight points apiece and Scott Boisvert had six steals.
Knicks 51, Lakers 18 â Kyle McCarthy, Scott Wexler and Vince LaFrancesca helped power the Knicksâ offense in a win over the Lakers. McCarthy added five rebounds and three blocked shots while Patrick Svitek had seven rebounds and three blocked shots. For the Lakers, Dan OâConnor canned 10 points while Chris Haylon dished off eight assists and Grant Braun had seven rebounds. Nicholas Badiola anchored the D.
Wildcats 35, Nets 31 â Andrew Golankiewicz and Ben Miles scored 10 points apiece to lift the Wildcats past the Nets. Henry Helgren and Mathew Baier also played well. For the Nets, Dan Greenwood and Tom Masher popped in six points apiece as Kevin Carney, Joe Fedak and Chris Winters had solid performances.

For the Eagles, Robbie Phillips scored 10 points and dished off five assists. Ryan Murphy had three steals and Zack Dent grabbed eight rebounds.
Bullets 28, Grizzlies 8 â Sam Kerr canned 12 points and Brendan McNamara pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Bullets. Zachary Bryan had seven assists and Kyle Vignone made eight steals. For the Grizzlies, Ryan Powers scored six points and John Fellin had seven boards. Spencer Williams and Andrew Murphy played well.
Knicks 38, Grizzlies 22 â Brendan Blawie scored 14 points and Dan OâConnor grabbed 10 rebounds to lift the Knicks to the win. Chris Haylon (six assists) and Ben Kaye played well. For the Grizzlies, Spencer Williams canned 10 points as Ryan Powers (six assists), Andrew Seymour (three steals) and Ryan Daly (seven rebounds) had good games.
Sonics 45, Eagles 16 â Tucker Schmidt scored 12 points as Alex Miller and Tom Murtha scored 10 points apiece to lead the Sonics to the win. For the Eagles, Dan Aurelia had four points as Zach Dent played well on D.

Zachary Bryan dished off six assists and Greg Campbell made six steals. For the Celtics, Evan Kennison and Rich Andreotta combined for 10 points. Dana Hansen had four assists as Sean Devaney and Jeff Keating played well.

Gaels 24, Bulls 21 â Meredith LaPerch canned 10 points and Ashley Peck dished off four assists to lead the Gaels. Jaime Keating played well. For the Bulls, Mary Plavnicky popped in 10 points, Michele Davies made four steals, and Katie Holroyd grabbed five rebounds.
Gaels 30, Suns 29 â Jen Callery scored 10 points and Michelle Rahtelli dished off five assists to lead the Gaels to the win. Kate Cummings and Jamie Keating played well. For the Suns, Katie Pessin scored 25 points, but couldnât lift the Suns to the win. Sara Benson added a key basket and was strong on D. Amanda Swift grabbed eight rebounds and Pam Rothenberg hustled on both ends of the floor.
Shamrocks 37, Liberty 30 â Lisa Vendel poured in 26 points to lead the Shamrocks to the win. Casey Kerns, Audra Sarna and Alysa Buda played well. For the Liberty, Lindsey Burns scored 10 points as Emma Fiore played well.
Huskies 20, Shamrocks 16 â Ellen Ritzinger and Jillian Jagoe scored eight points apiece to lift the Huskies to the win. Shannon Zamary and Samantha Whitley had solid performances. For the Shamrocks, Lisa Vendel canned 12 points as Maggy Gibbons, Annie Fletcher and Christie Iorfino played well.
Bulls 30, Comets 26 â Mary Plavnicky popped in 14 points to lift the Bulls past the Comets. Nicole Escoda dished off four assists and Brittany Bausch played well. For the Comets, Samantha Lockhart dropped in eight points and Shannon Paproski, Michele Margait and Kristen Errico had good performances.
