Clare York

Clare (Peterson) York, 81, of 47 West Street, Newtown, died May 28 at Danbury Hospital of an aortic aneurism.

Mrs York, wife of Arthur M. York, was born in Naugatuck March 24, 1919, daughter of the late Harry and Mildred (Noonan) Peterson. She was a graduate of Simmons College, Boston, Mass., class of 1940.

A resident of Newtown the past 29 years, she was a member of the Newtown Women’s Club, a former member of the Spay and Neuter Association. She was partially instrumental in initiating additional home care service through the Visiting Nurse Association.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Anita Sawyer of Milburn, N.J., Rita Read of Waltham, Mass., and Carolyn York of Bethesda, Md.; and one sister, Collette Kauffman of Glen Rock, N.J. She was predeceased by a fourth daughter, Susan Stensberg of Madison, Wisc.

Following cremation on Thursday, a memorial service will be held at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, on Saturday, June 3, at 1 pm. The family will receive friends of Mrs York from 11 am to 1 pm at the funeral home.
