Lions Club: ‘The Great Pumpkin Race

What can you do with pumpkins? There is always carving them or making a nice pumpkin pie (or ice cream, if you’re really ambitious) from them.

Newtown residents also learned last year that it is also possible to make a pumpkin racer and participate in The Great Pumpkin Race. Newtown Lions Club will host the Second Annual Great Pumpkin Race on Saturday, October 29, in the parking lot behind Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street.

The event is scheduled to run from 11 am to 2 pm.  Rain date is Sunday, October 30.

The idea is to have pumpkins on wheels compete with each other in speeding down a hill. Races will be arranged by age category: 8 and under, 9–12, 13–17, and 18 and older. Run-off competitions will follow the heats that have a lot of participants.   

For those who cannot engineer a pumpkin that will stay on the wheels, Lions Club engineers will have a limited number for sale the day of the event.

The fun does not stop with the pumpkin races, however. There will also be three additional pumpkin-themed competitions, again judged in the same age categories. Prizes will go to the funniest, the scariest and the best decorated pumpkins. Pumpkins may be entered in both the best decorated contest as well as the pumpkin races. 

For those who love to bake, there will be pumpkin and apple pie contests. Entries will be tasted by local bakers and food experts who will decide on the most delectable pies. Those entering these contests will need to bring two pies, one for tasting and one for auction. Prizes will be awarded in this contest as well.

Finally, the Lions will have a medieval style trebuchet on site, ready to fire pumpkins into the field.
