A Chinese Play With Two Parables
A Chinese Play With Two Parables
NEW HAVEN â Quinnipiac Universityâs Theater for Community will present The Caucasian Chalk Circle at Long Wharf Theatre Stage II, April 14-17. Curtain will be 8 pm Thursday through Saturday, April 14-16, and at 2 pm on Sunday, April 17.
Written by Bertolt Brecht in 1945 in anticipation of the end of the Second World War, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is based on a 14th Century Chinese play and combines two parables. One features a peasant girl who steals a baby but becomes a better mother than its natural parents, and the other depicts an incorrigible scoundrel who becomes a judge and brings justice to the people through his unconventional rulings.
âThis play is an adventure story and a love story,â said Director Robert Bresnick. âIt is an extremely funny, very moving, very exciting and always astute and wry examination of the consequences of war.â
Tickets are $12, $8 for students and senior citizens. For tickets, call Crystal Brian, professor of theater at Quinnipiac, at 203-582-8394 or send email to crystal.brian@quinnipiac.edu.
