ANTHONY CARO’S STEEL SCULPTURES AT MITCHELL-INNES & NASH OCT. 18

avv/gs set 9/25 #713569

NEW YORK CITY — Mitchell-Innes & Nash will present an exhibition of a series of new galvanized sculptures by British sculptor Anthony Caro in its Chelsea gallery, on view October 18–November 21.

The show marks the artist’s third exhibition at Mitchell-Innes & Nash since the gallery became Caro’s exclusive United States market representative in 2002. It will be Caro’s first exhibition in Chelsea. In conjunction with the exhibition, Annely Juda Fine Art presents a complementary exhibition of works from this new series in London through October 26.

The New York exhibition will include a selection of six large-scale, galvanized and painted steel sculptures as well as a group of smaller floor and tabletop pieces, all made between 2005 and 2007.

The dialogue between sculpture and architecture is a major interest of Caro’s, and these new sculptures are the latest to explore this area — often incorporating found steel objects, including girders, mesh and tubes. These works are, however, the first in which Caro has galvanized the steel. The silver sheen of the zinc coating complements the colored elements, which recall Caro’s painted sculptures from the 1960s and 1970s. The monumental works on view range in size from 7 to 10 feet high, and weigh up to two tons each.

A hardback book will accompany the exhibition, which includes illustrations of more than 30 sculptures in the galvanized series.

Despite being in his early 80s, Caro’s energy is undiminished. He will be in New York for the opening of the exhibition on October 18 and will take part in a discussion with fellow artist Frank Stella at the drawing center on October 16 at 7 pm to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Triangle Artists’ Workshop, which Caro founded in 1982.

Mitchell-Innes & Nash Chelsea is at 534 West 26th Street. For information, 212-744-7400 or www.miandn.com.
