Youth Mental Health First Aid is a six-hour certification course that introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds an understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health or substance abuse challenge.

Northwestern Connecticut AHEC (Area Health Education Center) will offer the course at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street, on Wednesday and Friday, September 24 and 26, from 11 am to 2 pm each day.

The course is for teachers, coaches, mentors, and after school providers; college students enrolled in social work, psychology, counseling, nursing and other related fields; student leaders, resident assistants, and residence life staff; and volunteers and the general public. It features hands-on activities and practice, a five-step action plan, an overview of local medical resources, and a resource manual packed with information on topics covered in the course.

Youth Mental Health First Aid covers how to help those ages 12-18 when they are experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.

Support for the September training is being provided in part by The Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation. Because of this, the couse being offered in Newtown is free for residents.
