What is the best plan of development for the re-use of Fairfield Hills? I want to see playing fields, municipal buildings, schools, a YMCA, some commercial uses, and if necessary for financial reasons, some housing for the elderly. Becker and Becker appears to have the best proposal, although none of the proposals are perfect. We may have to buy property if we can’t work things out with a developer. That’s the heart of our town.

How do you feel about giving tax breaks to special groups: senior citizens, volunteer emergency personnel and new businesses? I think some tax abatements should be given to seniors. I think it should be increased from where it is now. As for emergency volunteers, absolutely. They are the lifeblood of our town. We couldn’t buy what they give us for free. In terms of new businesses, it depends on the economic climate. If there’s a time when we really need to entice new business, then we need to consider it. On the other hand, if economic times are strong…

What are Newtown’s three most pressing capital needs? How do we plan for them given the nearly $60 million worth of projects currently on the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP)? Fairfield Hills, new and expanded schools with ball field areas, and municipal space. The finance committee of the council has done a good job of financially planning for those things. We have been planning for these things for the past five years. I feel proud of that. We are far ahead of where we were when the Legislative Council first came into existence in 1975 in terms of financial planning.

What skills do you have for the job that will most benefit the Town of Newtown? Experience, municipal financial knowledge and ability. I also bring the memory to the council, being a member since the council was formed, except for a two-year hiatus.

Why do you feel you should be reelected? I have true, hands-on financial experience. I love this town. I work here full-time. I also bring dedication and ability. I have only missed twice in 20 years. I’ll stand up for what I believe in, even politically sensitive areas. I think I have the confidence to do that.

Is there one aspect of Newtown’s government you would like to see changed? Sometime in the future, we’re going to have to look at a town manager. There’s too much turnover in administrations.
