A jazz tribute to singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell is scheduled at Edmond Town Hall for the evening of Friday, June 16. The 8 pm show will be performed in the Alexandria Room of the landmark building at 45 Main Street; doors will open at 7.
Playing music from Mitchell's critically acclaimed jazz albums Shadows & Light, Hejira, Mingus, Miles of Aisles, Court & Spark, and The Hissing of Summer Lawns, the seven-member group includes three Newtowners - Leslie Ballard (vocals, flute), Steve Zerlin (bass), and Roger Post (drums) - along with local musicians Christian Martirano on keyboards, Tony DePaolo on guitar, and percussionist Lee Caron.
In 2015, then 71-year-old Mitchell was hospitalized with a serious brain aneurysm. While she is recovering slowly, the news sparked renewed attention to her music. Each member of Joni Mitchell Jazz Tribute have a deep respect and love of her music, and the challenges of her sophisticated arrangements.
Among many other hit songs, Ms Mitchell wrote "Woodstock," which became an anthem, defining a generation as a movement. She crossed the bridge from folk diva to jazz artist easily, hiring Tom Scott and the LA Express for her tour and Grammy-winning album Miles of Aisles.
Tickets for the June 16 performance are $12. Seating is limited to 150 attendees, so advance purchase is being suggested. Ferris Acres Creamery will be providing ice cream, and partial proceeds will benefit the Edmond Town Hall Restoration Fund. The public performance by Joni Mitchell Jazz Tribute will kick off a weekend of Newtown High School Class of 1972 reunion events.
Tickets can be purchased at the Edmond Town Hall box office during box office hours, or online at JoniJazz.brownpapertickets.com.
