‘Slaves In The Family’

Book Discussion

The book group at C.H. Booth Library will be meeting on Thursday, June 21, at 7:30 pm to discuss Slaves in the Family by Edward Ball. The meeting will take place on the third floor in Special Collections.

Edward Ball set out on a mission when he wrote this book. He wanted to learn more about the plantation story of his white ancestors, but also seek out the descendants of the slaves who had “shared” these plantation homes.

He writes, “The plantation heritage is not ‘ours’ like a piece of family property, and not ‘theirs’ belonging to black families, but a shared history. The progeny of slaves and the progeny of slave owners is forever linked.”

Mr Ball’s book explores the important issues of race in America and their roots. His is a fascinating book full of new insights.

Prior reading of Slaves in the Family is not required in order to attend and enjoy the discussion.

The library, at 25 Main Street in Newtown, can be reached at 426-4533 for additional information.
