— by Katie Winkler, Age 12 —

Night crept in with rain hitting the ground,

Inch by inch it tumbled down.

Then thunder rolled in with a rumble or two,

And you could see the lightning began to show through.

With the blink of an eye the house went pitch black,

Then all you could see was the neighbors’ white cat.

Now it began to get scary and quite creepy too.

I began to wonder what I should do.

I ran to my room and grabbed my flashlight,

Hoping that would help me gain some of my sight.

As I was sitting in darkness very, very alone,

I began to wonder when my parents would be home.

Then out of the darkness two headlights shone bright,

And I was happy to know my parents were all right.

Then as they walked in drenched with wetness,

I ran over quickly to give them a kiss.

We all went downstairs and sat in our chairs,

Drank our hot chocolate and told storytales.

Now that’s the end of this poem,

There’s no more to say,

Other than how much I’m looking forward to day!
