Police Probe Dawn Hummel Heist
At about 6:45 am on January 10, police responded to a burglar alarm sounding at Joyâs Hallmark, a greeting card and gift shop at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street.
On arriving, police found that the front plate-glass door had been smashed in by someone to gain entry into the store.
Police then learned that the burglar had stolen a display of approximately 70 Hummel-brand porcelain figurines, which are worth an estimated $15,000. The crime is first-degree larceny, which is a Class B felony.
The German Hummel figurines are widely collected items. Some prized examples of the ceramic art are valued at thousands of dollars by collectors.
Later on January 10, police recovered the stolen figurines, many of which were damaged. The figurinesâ recovery in North Haven occurred with the aid of North Haven police, Newtown police said. North Haven police had come across the Hummels in a stolen car, while they were investigating another crime.
Newtown police said they have a suspect in the Hummel burglary/larceny and are seeking an arrest warrant.
Police did not disclose the identity of the suspect, who reportedly is wanted by several police departments for various burglaries.
