Summer Basketball Camps
Lady Hawks
The Lady Hawks girls’ summer basketball league is open to players ages 9-15. Bantam, intermediate, and junior level girls are all eligible to participate. The league runs July 3 through August 22. Games will be played Tuesday and Wednesday nights, 5:30 and 6:30 pm at the Reed School outdoor courts (games will be moved inside for bad weather).
Cost is $100. Register through Newtown Parks and Recreation at www.newtown-ct.gov and use Activity # 409614-A. Contact League Director Scott Larsen at slarsen0141@yahoo.com for information.
There are no practices, no playoffs, no pressure, only games, and lots of fun. Campers do not need to attend every session. The league will include referees, scorekeeping, and mixed age teams.
The open league structure provides an opportunity for significant playing time. Assistants and referees will be there to enhance the experience by clearly explaining the rules and working with players who want extra help. A third night (either Thursday or Friday) will be added for pickup games.
Slamma Jamma
Slamma Jamma Basketball Camps, directed by Coaches Joe DeVellis and Marc DiDominzio, will be offered in town this summer. Slamma Jamma Sponsored by Newtown Parks and Recreation has scheduled three week-long sessions.
Campers have an opportunity to attend half day or full day sessions. The staff of college and high school coaches and players will be directed by Coach Joe DeVellis, assistant girls’ basketball coach at Westhill High School in Stamford, and Coach Marc DiDominzio, boys’ basketball coach at Plainville High.
The camp combines the teaching of the fundamentals of the game with games, contests, individual and team skill drills, and team competition. Opportunities to apply these basic skills are expanded for the more experienced players. Shooting technique and drills are emphasized. The sessions are adjusted for the age, ability, and experience of the campers each week.
